DESCRIPTION

The work of Nuno Maya and Carole Purnelle shows a wide range of multimedia applications in art and interactive installations. In their artistic practice they focus on light as a tool for converting and colouring architectural environments. They were invited to develop the “Human Tiles” for Glow 2008. Their materials are recordings of traffic in public spaces. In their digital process they abstract the visuals from their formal patterns and use them as blueprints for the design of mimic mosaic tiles which are projected on architectural surfaces. The public is part of the work. People paint the tiles with their colours and movements in real-time.

INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTISTS

How do you reflect on light as a material or media in your work?
Without light our work would not be possible. It is the medium with which we can express ourselves in this art work “Human Tiles”.
It allows us to cover the walls of a building with virtual tiles in a very fast way…and adding movement and interactivity to them.

What was the guiding interest in the conceptual approach of your work we see during GLOW?
The ephemeral movements of people in urban places creating constantly moving patterns is the main issue in our work.
We wanted it to be interactive and in real-time, like the lives of the public making part of it.

What made it interesting to work in Eindhoven?
The fact that our project uses the typically Portuguese tiles distribution method.
It is very interesting for us to project them in a completely different urban environment, mixing both cultures (tiles from Portugal projected in the Netherlands' urban environment)

What kind of response do you expect from the audience?
We expect people to have fun while they discover this interactive art work where their movements, shapes and colours are transformed in light and used to create virtual human tiles, with constantly moving patterns made of them selves.

Anything you would like to add?
The modularity of the project makes it to be possible to adapt to almost any building. And that is one of our objectives, to cross-culture the Portuguese virtual “Human Tiles” with other countries' architecture and landscape.
